In dentistry, retainers are described as fixation to prevent teeth from sliding back to their original position. Retainers are often used after orthodontic treatment in the retention phase.
What are retainers?
As you get older, teeth can shift. To prevent this, we recommend retainers (night braces). You wear these during the night so the teeth are fixed. A set of retainers usually lasts 6-12 months, then you replace them. We keep the 3D scan of your teeth available. With this, a new set can always be made.

The benefits of Orthoclear retainers
When splints are placed behind teeth, glue balls often become loose. Teeth then often shift as yet.
Therefore, we do not recommend a splint after treatment. However, upon special request, we can place them.
- Retainers also retain your molars.
- You can remove them and brush & floss your teeth normally.
- Better oral health without a fixed wire.
- You can also use retainers to whiten your teeth.

Additional info on different types of retainers
Retainer or fixed wire - What's the difference?
Simply put, there are two types of retainers. If there has been previous orthodontic treatment, often a splint will be present. That is a thin, metal wire behind the teeth in usually the upper and lower jaws. There are also removable retainers, which are similar to aligners. You wear them during the night to secure the teeth.
Orthoclear is not a proponent of the fixed wires, because they loosen very often. Usually this happens unnoticed and you don't discover it until teeth shift. In addition, they are not attached to the molars and are difficult to keep clean.
Question & Answer
Treatments with clear aligners usually have primarily an aesthetic purpose. The way the molars fit together is not corrected.
Usually you can do with a set of retainers for about a year. After that it is time for a new set. We can remake them based on the existing 3D scan of your teeth.
Actually, that's as long as you want to keep your straight teeth. As you get older, there is a very good chance that your teeth will shift. Unless you keep them in place with the retainers.
No actually not. The material is exactly the same and therefore just as comfortable. The only difference is that you wear retainers during the night.
No as with the aligners, this is not possible. But since you only wear the retainers during the night, this will not be a problem.
Yes, and even much better than with a fixed wire behind your teeth. So oral hygiene is also better with retainers.
If your teeth grind or clench during the night, wearing a protection is wise. Retainers are great for that too. So that way you even have 2-in-1.
